Historical background
EARLY STICK AND
BALL GAMES
The earliest recorded evidence of a ball
and stickplayer refers to Pharaoh Tuthmosis III who lived from 1490-1436
B.C.
The balls varied from 3 and 9 cm in diameter and were either stuffed
or solid. The stuffed ones were made of clay or straw and covered with
strips of leather, usually 12 in all, making the ball like a present day
softball. The club
or stick was made of wood bent at the end, somewhat like a hockey
stick.
One recorded activity is of the king being handed balls by servants who
then retrieved them after the king had "struck them away".
The first recorded accident in the ball and stick game appears to have
happened when Tuthmosis struck the ball which damaged the eye of Apophis
who was an enemy of the Gods. This particular ball
was made of wood.
